John Standing in Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming

John Standing (1934 - )

Film Deaths[]

  • King Rat (1965) [Maven]: A POW, he dies offscreen in the camp hospital after the doctor, James Donald, tells the orderly that he will not last the night.
  • The Psychopath (1966) [Mark Von Sturm]: Presumably dies off-screen after he is paralyzed from a fall and Patrick Wymark leaves him alone inside a secret room with his dead mother, Margaret Johnston. The last shot of the film is him crying out for Margaret.
  • The Legacy (1978) [Jason Mountolive]: While passing his supernatural powers on to Katharine Ross, he is killed when Sam Elliott short-circuits John's life-support system. (At this point, John is made up to look much older than he actually was at the time.)
  • Nightflyers (1987) [Michael D'Brannin]: To be added
  • 81/2 Women (1999) [Phillip Emmenthal]: Dies of unspecified natural causes (presumably a heart attack, although it appears to be too quiet and peaceful for cardiac arrest), while Polly Walker is manually stimulating him in the bedroom.
  • The Calling (2000) [Jack Plummer]: Electrocuted when Alice Krige drops an electrical device into his hot tub during a gathering of cultists.
  • V for Vendetta (2005) [Bishop Lilliman]: Poisoned (off-screen) by Hugo Weaving; his body is shown afterwards while Stephen Rea and Rupert Graves investigate the scene. (In the original graphic novel. it was specified that he was killed with a cyanide-laced communion wafer; in the film, the only indication that he was poisoned is Hugo's line "Stick out your tongue."

Television Deaths[]

  • Van der Valk: Everybody Does It (1977) [Ehrlich]: Commits suicide by placing a small derringer-like pistol in his mouth and firing into his brain.
  • Lexx: Walpurgis Night (2001) [Count Dracul]: Fatally shot in the back with a crossbow by Keith-Lee Castle as John was talking to Michael McManus.
  • Midsomer Murders: Bad Tidings (2003) [Dr. Charles Rust] Stabbed to death by Helen Grace who sneaks up behind him in as he works at his desk.
  • Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming (2011) [Lord Jon Arryn]: Poisoned (off-screen) by Kate Dickie as instructed by Aidan Gillen, as part of an attempt to provoke war between the Starks and the Lannisters. John's body is shown laid out in the throne room being prepared for burial as Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau watching.
