- The Black Cat (The House of Doom; The Vanishing Body) (1934) [Karen Werdegast Poelzig]: Playing a dual role as both mother and daughter (both named "Karen"), the mother dies (off-screen) under unspecified circumstances several years before the story begins; her perfectly-preserved body is shown on display in Boris Karloff's castle when Boris shows her to Bela Lugosi. (Boris tells Bela that she died of pneumonia, but it's strongly implied that Boris murdered her; the fact that Boris has several more women's preserved bodies on display makes it unlikely that they died of natural causes.) The daughter is killed (off-screen, exact method unknown) by Boris; her body is shown afterwards lying in Boris' dungeon when Bela removes the sheet from her face.
