note: as he invariably played villains, I’m sure he “died” in most of his movies; these are the only ones which I know the details.

Film Deaths[]

  • Murder in the Red Barn (Maria Marten, Or The Murder in the Red Barn) (1935) [Squire William Corder]: Executed by hanging (off-screen).
  • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936) [Sweeney Todd]: Burned to death after being trapped in his barbershop as it burns down.
  • The Face at the Window (1939) [Chevalier Lucio del Gardo]: Drowned in the Thames with his deformed and mentally retarded brother Harry Terry who reaches through the bars of his cage and gets Tod in an armlock just as Tod lowers the cage on to a ramp to tip Harry into the Thames and it topples in.   • Crimes at the Dark House (1940) [The False Percival Glyde]: Burned to death after he sets fire to the bell tower and then finds himself trapped inside.
  • King of the Underworld (1952) [Terence Reilly]: Judicially hung offscreen. A notice of his execution is posted on the gate of the prison. (Thanks to Brian)
